Lacuna method for fungal nails
What is the Lacuna Method?
The Lacuna Method is a method for treating fungal nail infections. It involves the drilling of micro holes into the nail plate so anti-fungal preparations applied can penetrate the nail bed - where the active portion of the infection lies.
How does it work?
The nail plate lies on top of the nail bed (the skin beneath the nail). The most active portion (and the portion which needs to be treated) of the infection actually lies on the nail bed, not the nail plate. This is why many over the counter topical antifungal solutions often fail to provide significant improvement. As it sits on top of the nail plate which is non-porous, therefore does not get to the nail bed. Through drilling micro-holes in the nail plate, this acts as a tunnel for antifungal solutions to seep through to the nail bed.The pressure from footwear upon the nail then spreads the solution across the nail bed. The fungal infection is prevented from spreading further and allows a new healthy nail to grow out.
As with any fungal nail treatment there is no quick fix, the infection only clears as fast as the nail grows, and this can take up to 18 months.
Who can benefit from the Lacuna method?
Anyone with a mild-moderate fungal nail can benefit from the Lacuna Method. When the fungal infection is severe and penetrating to the nail matrix (at the root - past the cuticle), topical preparations cannot access this part of the nail unit, and often only oral medications will prove effective.
Symptoms of a fungal nail include:
Crumbling nail texture
Thickening of nail plate
Discoloration - yellow/brown/dark/white
White patches on the nail plate
Lifting of the nail
Build up of debris beneath the nail
